Vakansie in die see, son, sand en branders

Oyster Bay is a small coastal town at the end of a dirt road. One of the real good things which can happen to one in a year is to feel the Oyster Bay road clattering under your wheels again and know that Oyster Bay is just over the next hill. For a visitor, sheer yearning makes the dust smell as sweet as perfume! Only later, when one has unpacked and taken a stroll on the beach, does the grumbling about the road start again and ‘...what are they going to do about it...’

Oyster Bay is small and peaceful and most visitors go there because they are able to appreciate the silence and peace. Strolling along the beach at low tide one loses oneself in memories and dreams of yesteryear. Fish that got away, puppy loves and dreams about the year to come. It is easy to regain one’s strength here and to once again know that all is well and under control - it was only the noise of the city that forced one of course and into the rough.

There is something magic in the gliding flight of a Seagull, the slanting run of a Sanderling and Dolphins slowly patrolling the beach. Things so perfect in their perfection... A small water-smoothed pebble picked up and stored in a pocket to mature. Later, surrounded by the noise of the city, one wonders why the pebble now looks different from the little universe it once presented on the beach and realise, that the same eye, can see the same thing different and sometimes more beautiful.

The people of Oyster Bay greet each other in the passing, like family. This is a scarce phenomenon these days as people are taught to avoid eye contact for personal safety. With a little bit of luck, and God’s blessing, please let us keep this treasured habit for quite a while.

Dinge wat so volmaak in eenvoud is...
